What’s the buzz, tell us what’s-a happening? Jesus Christ Superstar is embarking on a UK Tour of the critically acclaimed Regents Park Open Air Theatre Production! Marking the first UK tour of this musical in 11 years since the 2012 arena tour, and the first in theatres across the country since 2004. This international hit musical, originally a concept album, tells the story of the final days and weeks of Jesus’ (Ian McIntosh) life, before his crucifixion in this sung-through rock opera. Read on for our 5 reasons to see Jesus Christ Superstar on its UK tour! (This post does contain minor spoilers, but you should be pretty familiar with this story!)

1. The choreography
Choreographed by Drew McOnie (King Kong, Strictly Ballroom), this cast with an ensemble of up to 18 members on stage at once make such an impact throughout the show. The energy and movement used to depict the growing popularity of Jesus is perfect and the cast size really emphasises this as they consume the stage during choreographed moments in almost every scene. The movement is contemporary, unique and exciting, pushing the limits of the cast throughout for the most energetic performances which take your breath away.
2. The style of the show
Reimagined for the 2016 run at Regents Park Open Air Theatre, this production has all the style of a modern take to capture a new generation of audiences. Stylish costumes and symbolic use of glitter for violent scenes redefine the dramatic moments of the show, enhancing the impact of those scenes. In Judas’ (Shem Omari James) exchange of information on Jesus (McIntosh) to the Pharisees for silver, paint is used to coat Judas’ hands, symbolising not only his reward but his un-washable consuming guilt too which was so effective as the paint remained throughout act 2.

3. The set design
As the curtain rises to the unmistakeable score of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ by Andrew Lloyd Webber, the stage is dimly lit, covered almost entirely by a fallen crucifix which is lit within by low yellow lights and is smoking, creating a spine-tingling image. The gap in the backdrop made to look like where the cross has fallen from, contains a large tree, constantly lit through the show foreshadowing the demise of our antagonist. throughout the performance there’s hidden crucifixes, highlighted by the lighting too. The set hosts all the band on stage but also serves as platforms for the actors during many scenes too.

4. The voices
The entire cast of this show have such an amazing talent with their voices, with each principle role having their moment to shine and showcase their abilities to take the breath of the audience each time. There are so many amazing performances but a standout moment is of course the legendary ‘Gethsemane’ where McIntosh not only delivers a career defining performance with his fantastic voice, but plays guitar for the majority of the song too. It’s a musical theatre number that carries such anticipation, which McIntosh takes in his stride with ease.
5. It’s an absolutely amazing adaptation
Not putting this lightly, this is one of the best touring productions we’ve ever seen. There’s not a single part of this show that isn’t far off perfection. From the set, to the nuances in costume changes (trainers to sandals, we see you JC) to the knockout performances of every actor, this show really does leave you breathless and speechless. The visuals and drama in act 2 are astounding and carry such a weight as you leave the theatre too.

I’m summary, do not wait to get tickets for this show, get them now and get them for repeat performances because you’ll want to come back and see it again. It’s an absolute delight, a rollercoaster of emotion and packed with outstanding talent. The run has just begun so there’s plenty of dates to catch this show. Get your tickets by clicking here!
